Sugar: Evil or Essential?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Sugar and carbohydrates make for vast nutritional confusion among people. Are you still scratching your head? Or have you walked away from all the noise because it just doesn't make sense? If this is your response to whether sugar is evil or essential, you are not alone in that boat. Yet, there is hope for clarifying some confusion!

Sugar: Evil or Essential?

Because there is a lack of basic nutritional education in the U.S., information is often befuddling and incomplete. Heck, there are lobbyists working diligently to push their particular agenda around certain foods, like corn or beef and dairy to name a few. Of course confusion will abound! You have many reasons to question and wonder what is the best thing for you and your family! And the family doctor is not necessarily your Go-To person for these questions, either. What? Wait....why not?

Doctors will readily agree that sugar consumption needs monitoring, or minimizing. However, for a plan of action on how to accomplish this, your medical doctor will likely refer you to a nutritionist. Did you know that U.S. medical schools teach only ONE (1) semester of nutrition? However, if you have Naturopathic Doctors (ND) in your area, they will look at diet much more closely to educate you about how food can impact, or change your health.

A nutritionist can be very helpful for finding ways to address the battle with sugar, and many insurance companies will pay for one. (A nutrition-based health coach may go deeper than the nutritionist, but is not covered by insurance.) At the end of the day, we all really need to have a working understanding of some basics:

  • Sugars are carbohydrates necessary to supply fuel for the body.
  • Most dairy items, fruits, grains and vegetables are carbohydrates that the body uses as sugar for immediate energy. The body processes each of these foods differently, so not all sugar is created (or used) equally.
  • Cheese, eggs, beans, meat, poultry, seafood are proteins that they body uses for energy it can use over a slower period of time.
  • Oils, butters are fats, which provide the slowest supply of energy to the body but are needed to lubricate our joints, and keep the brain functioning, which is why heart healthy oils are important in your diet.
  • Everybody needs a balance of these three (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) food groups.

Caveat: nutrition remains a very young science. How it functions is as individual as you are. A plan that works for Mom may be ineffective or counterproductive to Sammy, Jr. Not always! But the point here is to recognize that as individuals, there may be some very specific things that need to be addressed for individuals in families.

When it comes to processed, refined (white) sugars, its impact reaches:

  • behavior (often misdiagnosed as ADD or ADHD);
  • brain functionality (poor memory; loss of brain function; cognitive decline);
  • the immune system and cause allergies that may create skin problems;
  • the brain and provokes Alzheimer's or
  • the digestive tract, leads to insulin resistance, which in turn can lead to Type 2 diabetes if ignored.

The average American eats a HALF pound of sugar daily, or the equivalent of over 175 pounds a YEAR. Hold up ~ read that again: over 175 pounds yearly! So the aforementioned are just a few of the health problems attributed with over consumption of processed, refined white sugar which includes HFCS (high fructose corn syrups).

The half pound of daily sugar intake does include things like honey, maple syrup, agave syrup or molasses, but the vast majority consumed is the evil HFCS followed by refined (cane and beet) sugar sources. This translates into about 700 calories a day just from refined sugars!

To simplify the sugar battle, consider fresh fruits and fresh vegetables as the essential sugars to have in your diet. These carbohydrates bring much more to the table than just gorgeous color and texture to the palate. They bring essential nutrients that also fuel the body in a healthy way: vital fiber, vitamins and minerals.

For greater health, a balanced diet of fresh, organic fruits and veggies are always winners. Contrary to what Atkin's preached, and in line with what the Paleo plan recommends, fresh veggies and fruits are important parts of a well-balanced food plan.

If "I know I should eat better"is the hardest piece of thispuzzle, you have tons of options. Really! Part of the challenge to kick the evil sugar demon is to adjust your overly sweetened palate to a diet that is not saturated with sweet tasting foods:

  • There are plenty of sweet vegetables to try.Perhaps the number one winner is sweet potatoes (or yams). Try these gorgeous orange gems baked (not fried!) as a replacement to your favorite mashed potatoes.

  • Experimentwith using coconut milk, some cinnamon, ginger and cloves mixed into a yam mash. All of a sudden, that yummy side dish tastes like dessert! Loaded with fiber (if you eat the skin) and beta-carotene (vitamin A) among other things.

  • Try raw, steamed, stir-fried and baked versions of certain veggies. Carrots and broccoli are perfect examples. They can both be eaten raw, steamed with garlic, olive oil and vinegar or lemon juice. Tossed into stir fry, pasta or salads. Some recipes even combine fruits in the salads.

  • Seasonings can work magic to change the whole experience of eating. Use oil carefully, and be sure to add some acid (lemon, lime or vinegar) to bring more flavor to the taste buds. When selecting seasoning blends, chose wisely: there are all kinds of hidden sugars in most commercial seasoning blends!

  • Be prepared to try something at least 5 times before you completely decide you are unwilling to include a vegetable. Experiment with how your veggies are prepared to have diverse taste and new texture experiences.

  • Try pureed soups as an easy way to have a batch of veggies. Simply add organic chicken or vegetable stock and seasonings, cook until veggies are fork tender. Then throw everything in the blender (including the cooking water where all the vitamins and minerals cooked out), and puree until smooth. A dollop of creme fraiche, light sour cream or even plain yogurt can add some extra creaminess to the soup's texture!

  • Butter does a lot to please the taste buds. Again, go carefully with its use. Butter has twice as much energy value (calories that are more easily stored as fat, too!) as sugar. So rather than trade one evil for a lesser one, begin with a lighter touch. After a while, you may find that you need very little butter at all, and olive oil steps in as a healthier alternative.

Learning to move toward change around food is an emotionally charged process for most people. Take small steps forward to see how you can test the waters. Be prepared for the challenges ahead of time by accepting them as part of the process. Just as babies learn to toddle before the walk, there's a lot of falling back to the floor that happens before they even learn to stand up.

Release expectations that you eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables by the end of the first week. Start with one new color, or one particular veggie for a week. Your palate can and does change over time, so there's another unexpected change for the positive! Flexibility creates a manageable approach to switch a long-held mindset. See how curiosity can pave a smoother experience: when the mind is curious there is little expectation about anything new!

Buen Provecho & Bon Appetit!

Supplementing The Paleo Diet: How To Apply Supplements Effectively To The Paleo Diet

How to supplement your paleo diet without going overboard or applying too much thought...

Supplementing The Paleo Diet: How To Apply Supplements Effectively To The Paleo Diet

The paleo diet is fantastic, and while paleo meals contain many different food groups which themselves contain excellent nutritional properties, sometimes you'll need to cover your bases. Some areas of nutrition require a bit of bolstering, and let's be serious; sometimes it isn't possible to give your body everything it needs every single day.

I will attempt to break this post up into sections which are easy to understand, internalise and action. I'll provide pro's and con's to each option I recommend so that you can make your own mind up on which option is best for you.

  • Multivitamins: What multivitamins are required vs what multivitamins are desired
  • Essential fatty acids: When to take them and which ones to take
  • Other supplements: Green tea extract, protein shakes and weight loss substances

MULTIVITAMINS
Multivitamins are widely considered as being essential to any diet. Most people do take vitamins as part of a "good practice" philosophy and that's OK. In fact, taking vitamins as a supplement to your paleo meals is favourable. However, should taking multivitamins be a requirement? Perhaps not... I'll explain why:

  • You should be eating enough daily to get all the nutrients your body needs, If you haven't got this right, perhaps you need a cookbook which could provide you with some recipes you can use as a base to fall back on. Ensuring you get enough good protein, fat and calories every day can be difficult, and having a paleo centric cook book on hand can take the guess work out of meal making.
  • It's not that you require multivitamins, it's just that its favourable. It's a good practice, and by that I mean that you should take vitamins as a supplement because its a good move on your part. You are covering your bases, and while it may appear at first that I'm advocating a "bandaid for a bullet hole" idea the real point is to blanket as much of your nutrition as possible and so the desired multivitamins should be as high quality as possible.
  • Drink a lot of water. Because of the increased load multivitamin supplements can take on your organs, namely the kidneys and liver, you should drink more water so that you can expel waste more effectively. Basically, the blanket approach to nutrient supplementation that is multivitamins will allow your body to not use a portion of those very nutrients. These "waste" nutrients need to be expelled in the form of sweat and urine.

I would advise taking multivitamins which are fairly comprehensive, but are of exceptional quality. Buy at the top of your budget, and when in doubt, stick to one of the top brands of multivitamins.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS

While there is some controversy around which fatty acids are good or bad for you, the general consensus is that they are in fact beneficial. Personally, I've noticed decreases in resting heart rate, as well as improvements in sleep, eyesight and the condition of my skin. The EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) I take are pretty high in dosage, about 1000mg, and while others are of competing dosage amounts, I've found that the better the brand, the better the performance. EFA's are one of the best diet supplements you can choose to include in your paleo meals, as most people lack the required levels of fatty acids in their diets, even when they are trying hard to cover their bases.

  • Try and take the EFA's at different times of the day. I've noticed that if I take them before I go to sleep I generally sleep better, and in the morning my eyes are rested and feel relaxed. This is especially good to do if you work with computers during the day and get home only to find you are looking at more screens.
  • Eat a meal with your EFA's. Essential fatty acids are often derived from fish oils, and thus have some pretty heavy odur and taste if ingested on an empty stomach. I like to have mine with my morning breakfast, but you can have them whenever you like, as long as it is with a meal.

OTHER SUPPLEMENTS:

  • Green tea extract: Green tea extract contains epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, which has been shown to help your body kill fat cells, as well as prevent them returning. EGCG also promotes the body to store carbohydrates in top level muscle, which not only will help with muscle mass development, but also in muscle endurance. Make sure you take a decaffeinated supplement to avoid bouncing off the walls. Timothy Ferriss has a great section on the benefits of green tea supplements and EGCG in his book, "The Four Hour Body".
  • Protein shakes: Protein shakes are an easy way of getting a relatively large amount of protein into your body. While the protein in most protein shakes is derived from milk in the form of whey protein, I still recommend using shakes a way of getting your protein for the day on top of what you get from your paleo meals. The convenience of having a protein shake available to eat is enough of a reason to make sure you always have some. I keep mine on top of my fridge!
  • Meal replacement shakes: Meal replacement shakes are a great way to cater for the amount of meals you aim to eat everyday. However, some, or most of them are high in carbohydrates. If you are just drinking meal replacement shakes to replace one of your paleo meals, you are approaching their purpose in perhaps the wrong way. I would recommend that you keep a meal replacement shake on hand to be used as part of your paleo diet supplements, and as part of your entire paleo food eating list.

SUMMARY

While the pull of using supplements as part of your diet is an easy route to go down, you should always try and eat real food for nutrients. If you are doing lots of physical exercise then you might in fact need to supplement your paleo diet. It will be difficult to get all the protein you need to support effective muscle growth without a protein supplement. In fact, for active people I'd recommend using supplements to ensure good muscle development.

Multivitamins should be part of your diet even if you get a lot of vitamins and minerals from all your food. I'd recommend you use multivitamins as a blanket approach to getting all your nutrients. If you are going to choose one thing to add to your paleo diet, I'd say that multivitamins are one the best dietary supplement you can get and they are in the realm of being essential.

  • Get a great protein shake and add it to your daily eating routine, a good protein shake is one the best dietary supplements you can.
  • Multivitamins and essential fatty acids should be added to all your paleo meals, and you should try and maintain a steady "take them everyday" schedule to ensure your body has ample vitamin and minimal reserves to stave of infection and illness.
  • Try and work out exactly what you need from your paleo diet supplements and only aim to get what you actually, really need. Excess is just that, excess, and your kidneys and liver will take a hit if you are always overloading them with excessive, concentrated nutrients.

Why Invest in a Paleo Book?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Losing weight and becoming healthier are two of the most common concerns among many people across the globe. It seems that the demand for weight loss and fitness solutions has grown by leaps and bounds. This is most probably because of the fact that a lot of new diseases start to threaten the lives of humans. One of the primary reasons why people get such illnesses is their lifestyle -- most particularly, the way they eat.

Why Invest in a Paleo Book?

A lot of diet regimens and plans have been introduced to address this demand. One of the most popular nowadays is the Paleo diet. This diet is also known as the "caveman diet" and "Blueprint diet." The Paleo diet is also the shorter term for Paleolithic diet. Taking from the diet's name, this involves following how the cavemen of the Paleolithic era ate.

Why eat like a caveman, then? Nutritionists and dieticians came up with the idea that the cavemen of the Paleolithic diet were stronger and healthier than humans of today. They also lived longer. Although humans of today may not level with the cavemen in terms of ultimate strength and life longevity, the Paleo diet is still known to improve one's health and lifestyle.

Given that the Paleo diet can help better your health, it is reasonable for you to wonder how you can actually start and continue with the Paleo diet. Sure, you can do online research but consolidating all of the information may be a little difficult. To make your pursuit a lot easier, you would need a Paleo book.

Why invest in a Paleo book?

A lot of people who have tried following a particular diet would agree that doing so is not that easy. In one way or another, you will find yourself clueless of what to do next. If this goes on, you might just end up quitting altogether. There are a lot of distractions that may sidetrack you from your goal. Thus, you would need a structured and organized guide to assist you throughout.

A Paleo book can help you learn everything there is to know about the diet - from its meaning and the principles behind it and the foods that you can and cannot eat. Typically, a Paleo book also includes Paleo recipes that can make following the diet more enjoyable and not to mention, delectable. A Paleo book may also provide ideas on how you can plan your meals on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. This will help you keep up with the diet easier.

How to get the best Paleo book?

There are a lot of versions of Paleo books and there are a lot of authors who continue to compile their knowledge about the diet into one single book. You can find a Paleo book at a bookstore while you can also choose to purchase and download an e-book.

Although a lot of authors may release a book on the Paleo diet, they may outline similar concepts and information about the diet. Thus, you would need to read through book reviews for you to know which the best one is. You may also look through previews of the books or e-books for you to know what it contains.

Eating Your Heart Out While Losing Weight on Paleo Diet

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Paleo Diet basically tells you to eat real foods if you want to lose weight and live healthy. There's really no arguing about eating fresh fruits and vegetables or their benefits to human health. Eating liberal amounts of animal meat is just an added bonus! Though this diet encourages a large intake of protein and fats to mimic the diet of cavemen in prehistoric era, fruits and vegetables also constitute a large part of the Paleo style of living and eating.

Eating Your Heart Out While Losing Weight on Paleo Diet

So apart from eating the same old boring food, what can you do to spice up the eating experience? If you want to be playful and bold about your concoctions, you might want to try these following Paleo diet recipes.

First is your good old bacon. Honestly, who doesn't like to savour these fat laden strips? Instead of combining it with its usual egg sidekick, you can serve these yummy strips by placing them on a bed of raw vegetables and fruits to go with it.

Next is the famous powerhouse of nutrients- liver. Combining it with onions is simply heaven sent. All you have to organize are liver, a few onion slices, butter, and a sprinkle of pepper and salt to taste. The number of slices depends on how many servings you want to make. How easy it is to cook and set this easy Paleo diet dish up? Not to mention how fast it is going to disappear from your plate.

Wondering about using fruits innovatively? Well, you might want to try adding freshly cut apples along with your pork chop. Again, additional ingredients are like the previous one. Add onions, butter and a sprinkle of pepper and salt to taste. Is not that completely trouble-free?

As for snacks that you can indulge in them any time of the day. You can try making a smoothie made of coconut milk as a base. You can add any fruit you like, then one or two raw eggs. If you're a little bothered about it being raw, don't sweat over it because you won't really taste anything remotely raw because of the added fruits. Remember that eggs are good source of protein so adding it is a plus. But if you are worried about food poisoning, then you may want to skip them or maybe use cooked eggs as an independent snack.

You can also check out various Paleo cookbooks for other exceptional and mouth-watering Paleo diet recipes. If you want to better enjoy your diet, experimenting will certainly earn brownie points in your meal plan! Because after all who would want to eat same things over and over again? Boredom with foods is the most common reason to demotivate people from following any kind of diet.

Consider Calories In Vs Out AND Macronutrients For Maximum Results

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Something interesting I was thinking about the other day... Let's say you burn, on average, 2500 calories a day. Whatever, we just need a number here. And you eat 6000 calories a day (that's a lot of food, but can be realistically consumed by an average person). If a pound of fat is 3500 calories, you'd be gaining 1 pound every single day (well that's the issue at hand). Now, let's say you were to continue this pattern for a month. Hell, let's up the ante. Say you burn 2500 calories a day, but you eat 9500 calories a day!!! That's a 7000 calorie surplus. If you were to do this now, for one month, 30 days, theoretically, you would gain 60 pounds! Holy F!!! But what I was wondering is, "Would that really happen?" Think about it. A month is not that long of a time. If fat loss/gain is purely a numbers game, then experts would say you'd be 60 pounds fatter in a month... could this really be?

Consider Calories In Vs Out AND Macronutrients For Maximum Results

My Humble Theory

Honestly, I doubt you'd gain 60 pounds following this trend. Especially not 60 pounds of pure fat. I think the body would possibly not absorb everything, or bypass nutrients somehow. However, you would obviously gain a substantial amount of fat so don't go on the 9500 calorie diet tomorrow, please:) Anyway, that's not the focus of this post anyhow, just some food for thought.

The Importance of Macronutrients

I'm sure you or someone you know has Googled about this diet or that diet... Atkins, Zone, Pritkin, Raw Food Diet... I could go on for days. With so many different theories, all coming from the "experts" how are you supposed to know what the heck to eat!? Sound like you? Well I have tried many different diets and seen what works and what doesn't work for me. What works best for me is the Paleo Diet. Why?

1. I tend to eat less food overall while staying full.
2. It's lower-carb as a by-product which works for me for faster fat loss.
3. The recipes are usually easy, so I can actually whip it up in the kitchen!
4. Kills off craving for junk food and sugar, so I don't cheat as much.
5. Tastes good.

Okay, now if you're wondering what the heck the Paleo Diet is, then read my other Ezine post on it. The Paleo Diet is not a "Fad Diet." It's more of a lifestyle diet, which means less of a roller coaster effect. It revolves around natural, unprocessed foods, specifically meats, nuts, veggies, and fruits. I don't want to dive too far into debating diets on this post, that's another time. But the point is that macronutrients (carbs, fats, and protein) will affect hormones and your body will respond to them differently.

If you haven't heard of Gary Taubes, he is a well-touted nutritional expert and, author of "Good Calories, Bad Calories." The FDA I'm sure hates him, because he goes against the Conventional Wisdom grain to the max. His book explains in detail the mechanics of food energy and how it's processed by the body. Not only the quantity, but also the type of macronutrients that are consumed.

Here's a summary of some of his key principles from his book and readings:

* Counting calories is overrated. It's sometimes overlooked as to where those calories come from because of the effect they have on hormones (carbs, fat, protein).

* Refined carbs and sugar cause a quick spike in insulin(high glycemic index). Insulin is a storage hormone and is largely responsible for bodyfat accumulation, especially for endomorphs or people who tend to gain weight easily.

* People eat food to fuel the body, but carbs will often make you feel lethargic and actually end up with less energy than before.

I recommend you read some of Taubes' stuff or watch some of his videos. Heck, buy his book if you want. You'll probably wind up a bit more enlightened than you are now regarding dieting and the like.

Okay, so there are the people who focus solely on macros, thinking on Atkins they can eat 5000 cal/day of fatty meat and lose weight super quick. They forget, or pretend to forget, that how much you eat also makes a big difference. Then there's the other guys...

The Other Side of the Equation

The "other guys" so to speak, run with the idea that it doesn't matter what you eat, but only how much you eat. Okay, to an extent, they're right. If you burn 2500 calories a day and eat nothing but Twinkies, but only 800 calories worth(what is that, like half a Twinkie?) you will lose weight. That's right! Maybe I'll sell an eBook on the "Twinkie Diet" and make millions. But I won't, because they might consider me a serial killer if I did. And besides the obvious reasons, here's why this diet would suck:

1. Your diet would be a 100% processed, refined diet... yuck.
2. Nothing but carbs and fat... a bad combination, and oops, no protein. Byebye muscles!
3. Carbs will make you hungrier, so you'd be miserably starving all the time... 800 calories of anything and you're likely to be starving all day.
4. You'd probably die in a week... not really, but your arteries might scream at you.

Obviously, no one is going to take this route (God, please don't), but the fact is, 800 calories of ANYTHING a day, and you're gonna lose weight because you're burning well over 800 calories a day even in a coma. But what kind of weight, muscle? Water? Maybe some fat, but with the loss of everything else, you may wind up looking worse than before.

Nutritional "Experts" are Constantly Playing it Safe

"Don't try and eat more than a 500 calorie deficit a day, or you'll go into starvation mode and lose muscle." How many times have you heard that before? Okay, let me first say, that is BS. I can attest to that firsthand. Low calorie diets can work wonders, it's chronic extremely-low calorie diets where metabolism will slow down and bad things will happen. You could safely go two weeks at even a 800-1000 calorie deficit and as long as you keep following a resistance training program at least a few times a week, you will lose hardly any muscle if any.

So the bottom line is that What you eat and How much you eat are both significantly important factors. Don't get caught up so much into what kind of diet you get into that you forget to watch your calories. But also don't let yourself believe that "I'm on the XYZ Diet and so I can eat however much I want" either. I know, I know... it's tough. You gotta pay attention to quite a few things, but if this were easy, everyone would walk around with a Hollywood Body year round.

I recommend doing some research on the Paleo Diet for recipes and some more detailed info. I honestly believe it's the easiest, healthiest, and most effective way to an ideal body weight and optimum health.

What Food Belongs On Your Paleo Diet Shopping List?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Do you know the types of food you need to place on your caveman diet shopping list? The great news about eating a Paleo meal plan is that you will notice much more flexibility than you do on various other diets. Indeed, when you are attempting to work out what foods to place on your Paleo diet grocery list there is only one question you need to ask yourself, "Would a caveman eat this?"

What Food Belongs On Your Paleo Diet Shopping List?

Remember, the Paleo diet is centered on eating the food that our bodies are meant to eat. Our ancestors did not have sugar, processed foods, and sodas. Instead, they ate the way that nature intended, they ate from the earth. Cavemen would hunt animals to eat, gather their own seeds, and pick their own vegetables. There was no such thing as a cheese burger or a caesar salad dressing. And yet, they were incredibly healthy and extremely strong. It was an incredibly primal way of life with their day revolving around survival and looking after their kin. All of these matters take a huge amount of strength and stamina.

Only things which a caveman might potentially have eaten should get onto your paleo diet shopping list. They are the meals that contain high amounts of natural energy. And among the easiest means to do this is to include a lot of lean meats to your list. Lean meats possess lots of protein and protein inspires rapid weight loss and making you feel full for a greater period of time. So you should add steak, chicken, turkey, and low fat mince to your caveman recipes. And make sure you snip off any fat that is on the meat before you eat it. One more great suggestion with meat is to seek organic and natural or grass fed meat. After all, if the animals have been consuming processed foods, then that meat may not be able to give you the protein that you need on this diet.

Seeds and nuts are also a very important part of your Paleo diet. Not only do nuts and seeds help you feel full, but they are easy to pick up and take anywhere. Countless times we find ourselves famished and stuck in traffic or at the office without having our healthy and balanced food. But if you keep a pouch of mixed nuts and seeds with you, you will be able to conveniently stay with your healthy eating plan all day long.

A decent supply of organic fruit and vegetables should be maintained in your home as they contain essential nutrients that are not found in any animal produce.

Last but not least, you want to include some drinks to your grocery list. Though it is a fact that filtered water should be drunk plentifully, it doesn't mean you have to lose your favorite beverages. For instance, you must stay clear of normal soft drinks, but you can have diet soda. You may also have coffee and tea in small amounts.

Establishing a Paleo diet food list may well seem frightening in the beginning, but it does not need to be. Just stay with the mantra "would a caveman eat this?". Also, remember to place some beverages on your shopping list, just be sure to evaluate what those beverages contain before you purchase them.

Delicious Paleo Late Night Snack Ideas

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Those who follow the Paleo diet, might end up in a dead end when it comes to snacks recipes. Restrict ingredients might size down the ideas for snacks, especially the Paleo late night snacks.

Delicious Paleo Late Night Snack Ideas

Everyone has experienced the need for a snack late at night while watching TV or on the computer. The question is: What shall I eat? Although it might sound difficult to figure out, it is rather easy to get a Paleo snack if we have some simple ingredients at home.

Fruit and nut bars

One of the easiest ways to get a good Paleo late night snack is through fruit and nut bars. They are available in supermarket shelves and ready to be eaten on the spot. Special Paleo packages will provide the necessary nutrients without the need to worry about cooking or getting the Paleo ingredients. Of course fruit and nut bars can also be prepared at home. Almonds, pecans, pistachios, macadamia nuts and honey are some of the necessary ingredients to be used in the preparation. Having pre-made snacks available, is the best way to take care of the stomach late at night.

Vegetables

Fully Paleo, vegetables can be eaten in large quantities and they are one of the preferred food in the Paleo diet. Whether it is a carrot, lettuce or tomato, they can be eaten without being cooked; therefore they are an excellent alternative to a Paleo late night snack that may require cooking, or intricate preparation.

Fruit

Although fruit should be eaten moderately while on a Paleo diet, a little snack does not do any harm. A small banana, kiwi, grapes, pears, apples or strawberries can be eaten without any extra ingredient. However, almond butter or honey can be added for additional flavor.

Miscellaneous

There are other snacks that can be made by mixing several ingredients like:

Fruit and nut salad:where the taste of fruit is intensified by the flavor of several types of nuts. Honey can always be added as a natural sweetener.

Meat and fruit:stuffed dates where almonds, nut butter and bacon are all combined with dates turning this combination into a mixture of flavors and healthy nutrients. Although this recipe has a cooking time of 20 to 25, it is worth every waiting minute. The stuffed dates can be cooked during dinner time and saved for later, already thinking about the late snack that will be needed.

Vegetable Mini Quiche:Eggs, meat and vegetables are the three main ingredients for the mini quiches. Very easy to prepare and with a maximum cooking time of 30 minutes, these mini quiches are terrific snacks that taste even better when they are cold. They can be cooked during lunch or dinner or even overnight. Having them available in the kitchen means being tasty Paleo late night snack ready.

There is an endless list of Paleo late night snacks available. Sometimes we just have to let our imagination wonder and combine different foods to get tasty, healthy and fully Paleo snack recipes. Like in other Paleo recipes, adding a new ingredients or replacing one with a different ingredient is the best option to get a big variety of recipes.

What Makes This a Top Selling Diet Program?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

There is no shortage of diet programs available to anyone thinking about getting in shape, losing weight, or simply wanting to improve their overall health.

What Makes This a Top Selling Diet Program?

Many top selling programs such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig follow very specific formulas, and meet the needs of many individuals that require a very regimented "do this" type programs. Furthermore these programs provide extremely high levels of support in terms of focus groups, prepared meals, calorie counting tools, etc. However, these programs can be very expensive, and they may not be for everyone. They also may not convey all of the health benefits of other programs as they are focused more on weight loss than feeding your bodies the fuel they were designed for thanks to evolution.

One top selling program that is less than and yet produces amazing results is the diet solution program. We should take a look at this program to understand why it is not only a top seller, but why thousands of people find it very effective in meeting their goals.

This diet approach was designed by Isabel De Los Rios, a certified exercise specialist as well as a certified nutritionist. The program was originally developed several years ago as a way for Isabel to meet her goals of losing weight, getting in shape, and minimizing future risks of developing diabetes and heart disease. It builds upon what is relatively recent scientific findings around how the type of foods we eat not only affects our weight, but also contributes to the epidemic proportions of cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, and heart disease.

Many people love this diet because it focuses on education as well as specific, easy-to-follow instructions on meal planning, how to eat, etc. Isabel gives you the science behind her recommendations, which allows you to learn how to make intelligent choices anytime you are planning a meal, eating out, or simply snacking between meals.

The principles behind this diet are similar to the concepts associated with the Paleo diet (sometimes called "the caveman" diet). This overlap and shared approach includes:

  • Harmful effects of grains such as cereals, rice, wheat, pasta, and what these foods do to your body when you ingest them.

  • An overview of recent research into the glycemic index, and why you should be very aware of how foods impact your blood sugar and insulin levels.

  • Real facts and data around heavily marketed "healthy" foods and why they aren't as good for you as companies want you to believe (including soy as well as dairy products).

  • Determining your metabolism type using a simple tool, and understanding why this will change the types of food you eat on this diet.

This diet also provides ongoing support and resources aside from the comprehensive program itself:

  • Extensive ongoing support and shared experiences via an online community

  • Tips and tricks, new recipes, the latest research on foods delivered via email a few times a week.

  • Tools to make meal planning simply, with clearly spelled out categories of foods to select portions from for each meal, grocery shopping lists, and a separate recipe guide that will likely have you eating tastier foods than you do now!

  • Concise advice on where to spend your money - which foods should be bought organic and which ones are OK to be conventional.

  • Frank discussion of the now outdated calorie counting model, and why optimal health shouldn't depend on this approach.

  • Justification for feeding your body as much of these food groups as you want, and not feeling hungry day in and day out.

  • Exercise not required to achieve real results - while important for overall health and well being, your starting point is your diet.

This program offers all of the above benefits and more - most importantly, the structure of the information, approach, and tools enable you to quickly incorporate this into your lifestyle. In fact you may not even realize after 2 months how much you have improved your lifestyle and eating habits - but you will notice feeling better and likely fat melting away. For a one time purchase of less than , it is one of the most economical choices you can make today to change your life.

Paleo Diet Recipes: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

On first impression you may be thinking that, like most diets, the Paleo diet is going to be too restricting/complicated and mealtimes could become an 'issue'. Not in the least! Do not even consider for a moment that Paleo diet meals and recipes are going to be boring, complicated or lack in variety. Paleo diet recipes result in wholesome flavoursome meals.

Protein plays a vital role in Paleo diet and meals should consist of approximately 60% to 70% percent of your daily food intake. The balance of course being fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds with additional oils used in preparation of the meals such as avocado oil, nut oils etc.

NO GRAIN OR DAIRY IS TO BE CONSUMED

Remember shop fresh, organic, natural and wild. To be totally Paleo, eat seasonal as well - this of course being carbon footprint friendly.

Lunch and dinner Paleo diet recipes and meals can be adjusted according to your own personal lifestyle and requirements. To start out take your usual recipes and merely substitute the 'cannot have' with a 'can have' - you will be amazed how quickly you adjust and how capable you are of making your own Paleo diet recipes.

Some ideas for your three main Paleo diet meals for the day:

Breakfast:

  1. 2 Poached eggs on a bed of lightly panned spinach
  2. Bowl of mixed berries with nuts and cashew cream
  3. A 2 egg omelette with filling of your choice eg - no dairy though
  4. Chicken liver and bacon with grilled tomato.
  5. Fruit smoothy of choice eg banana and nut; berries and fresh coconut blended with ice cubes.
  6. Steamed/grilled fish with grilled tomato and mushroom.
  7. Absolutely nothing wrong with having the leftovers from dinner the night before.

These can be adjusted according to your daily routine.

  1. Mushroom burger with salad

Paleo tartar sauce made from Paleo mayonnaise can be added to seafood, be it fish, shellfish or crustacean. A basic Paleo diet recipe for mayo is as follows:

3 - 5 Garlic cloves peeled (large)

Approximately 2 cups of organic olive oil

2 room temperature, lightly beaten free range egg yolks,

juice of 1 organic lemon

small quantity of lukewarm waster

Crush garlic cloves into a paste and add to the lightly beaten egg yolks. Lightly beat with wooden spoon until the mixture turns pale yellow.

While blending the garlic and egg yolk very slowly (drop by drop) add 3 tablespoons of the olive.

Blend gently until the mixture is thick and creamy then add ½ to 1 tablespoon of water and 1 teaspoon of the lemon juice.

Continue stirring while adding the olive oil in a very fine stream. If the mixture becomes too thick once again add 1 teaspoon of water and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.

Continue like this until all the oil is used.

Always mix by stirring in one direction only.

Should the mixture split - put it over into a clean bowl and add a teaspoon of lukewarm water and mix continue like this until fixed.

Most important have fun inventing your very own Pale Diet recipes and meals.

Tender BBQ Pork Chops - Some of the Best You Will Ever Taste!

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

You can have tender BBQ pork chops each and every time you barbecue if you take a few extra steps in your preparation. It really is that easy. Oh my goodness, most people think pork chops have to be dry and flavorless, but the reality is so much different than that.

Tender BBQ Pork Chops - Some of the Best You Will Ever Taste!

* two pork chops
* 1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp. lemon juice
* 3 tbsp. soy sauce
* 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
* 1/2 tsp. light brown sugar
* 1/4 tsp. fresh or dried rosemary
* salt and pepper to taste

Now I did not put garlic in there, but if you ask me garlic goes in almost everything so I would add some chopped or minced garlic to the marinade. You want to bring home the best that you can afford, not cheap pork chops. Pork loin chops are the ones that are the most tender, but sometimes the T-bone chops will work just as well.

And do not buy thin, thin, thin, thinking that you are going to save money. The flavor, taste, and texture will not be there. It does not pay to scrimp sometimes and this is one of those times. Then you will have people eat these and they will be turned off to pork thinking all pork chops are the same.

And That Is Simply Not True!

Trim off all of the extra fat and place your chops in a ziploc bag to marinate in. Thick chops, at least one inch thick. Chill your pork chops for at least one hour. Remove them and place on a plate and let them come to room temperature for about 35 minutes or so. Preheat your barbecue to high.

For tips on getting that high temperature on your grill and keeping it clean you can check out our opt-in newsletter where we have a lot of barbecuing tips and hints. Now for the tender BBQ pork chops, take them to the high heat portion of your barbecue and grill them for about 6 minutes, turning them halfway through. Then you can move them to a cooler section of the grill to finish cooking. Cook/barbecue/grill them for another 6-9 minutes.

When they are done, the juices should run clear as in chicken. And of course you can always use your instant read thermometer. And this is how you have tender BBQ pork chops which you have grilled on your barbecue. It is that easy. The Pork Foundation recommends that your pork chops are done and can be pulled at 160 degrees internally so you are safe if you follow their directions.

Best Sugar Cookie Recipe?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

There is nothing like a great sugar cookie recipe. Don't buy the roll of Pillsbury Dough, you can make a superb cookie that will remind you of the days when Grandma made them.

Best Sugar Cookie Recipe?

Grandma used to sit by the fire and drink her tea and Grandpa used to sip his coffee made from his French Press, before it was trendy. I loved seeing them sit there enjoying the day. When we walked in the house there were smells coming from the kitchen you just couldn't imagine. The sweet smell of warm sugar cookies invaded your senses. You knew today was going to be a treat.

It was a tradition that we enjoyed every year. The kitchen was filled with flour storms and the counters were sticky from Buttercream frosting. We had tin cookie cutters spread all over the table. I liked the boot best, my sister liked the angel.

Grandma had a special way with those cookies and she handed down the recipe to me. I was to teach my kids how to make these wonderful holiday sweets. It wouldn't be Christmas time without this recipe of Yummy cookies.
I am publishing it because I want you to enjoy the best sugar cookie recipe ever.

Grandma's Favorite Sugar Cookie

1 cup white sugar

1 cup powdered sugar

1 cup butter

2 eggs beaten

1 tsp cream of tarter

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp vanilla

4 cups flour

½ cup corn oil

Cream the sugars and butter together. Mix the beaten eggs, vanilla and corn oil, in. Add the dry ingredients .Mix all the ingredients well and chill overnight.
Bake at 375 F for 8-10 minutes....DO NOT OVERCOOK.

We used to make the funniest colors to decorate the cookies, most of them looked inedible. They tasted heavenly, though. We figured if we made them look gross enough, the adults would leave them alone. We were wrong. Everyone knew they were Grandma's famous sugar cookies from her handed down recipe book. This page was splattered with all sorts of colors. I have that book now. I love making these cookies with my kids.

Grandma's Favorite Frosting (don't forget the food coloring)

2 cups of powdered sugar

½ cup butter melted

1 ½ T Milk

1 tsp vanilla

Cream sugar, butter and vanilla. Add a small amount of milk (1 to 2 tablespoons). Beat until fluffy. If frosting is too sweet add a little more milk.

Try it this season. Enjoy your family and brew some wonderful tea or coffee and relax. Take the time to make memories with your family or neighbors or friends.

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Today, the Maltese people enjoy a varied Mediterranean cuisine, particularly influenced by Italian cuisine. Malta however has many historic links with other countries, and many other influences can be seen in Maltese cuisine, for example, Moorish influences.

Maltese Recipes and Cuisine

Some popular Maltese dishes include:

Planning Your Paleo Meals is Key to a Successful Paleo Diet

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

If you have recently learnt about the paleo diet, you'll have come across one the biggest hurdles anyone new to the paleo diet must face: where do I find my paleo recipes and ingredients and how do I plan my paleo meals correctly?

Planning Your Paleo Meals is Key to a Successful Paleo Diet

Most people when starting out on any diet begin with lots of motivation. They manage to stick with it for a couple of days, and all goes very well. After this lovely, motivated feel-good-about-yourself period however, most people will tend drop the diet altogether. Let us take a look at why that is.

The first reaction of most people will be: "This is too hard"! They will have run out of healthy ingredients in the fridge, they'll be invited by a friend to go eat in a restaurant with nothing remotely paleo friendly on the menu, and generally it all goes to pieces. When deciding the follow the paleo diet, it is extremely important that you take some time to plan your new dietary lifestyle. Motivation is what gets us all started, but it is discipline and planning that keep you going.

Let us take a look at what you will need:

- a comprehensive Paleo recipe list

If you can only think of three recipes for dinner, two for breakfast and a salad for lunch, chances are that you will be finding this very dull indeed. Having easy access to an extensive recipe book for all occasions is an absolute must.

- A fridge and even more important: a freezer!

Leading the busy life most of us have, there will always be times when you don't have what you need in the fridge. When you're hungry and tired, you'll grab whatever is left. The way you can fix this is by cooking large portions whenever you do cook! I always try to freeze an additional portion ready for use for when the inevitable moment of the empty fridge comes around.

- A fixed day to go shopping

There are quite a few places where you can buy paleo friendly ingredients, but Unless you're very lucky, you won't find them all in the same shop around the corner. Try to pick a fixed day every week, or every two weeks, where you can make time to go grocery shopping.

Selecting your paleo meals for the week should be fun. Browsing through recipes, planning your grocery list and buying the ingredients you need doesn't have to be tedious. By going about this in an organized manner, you will turn your diet that started by motivation into a daily habit. This is the key to success in the paleo diet.

If afterwards you are invited by a friend, and you find yourself cheating on your diet - you will be able to handle it much better. Having a fridge and a freezer ready for you next day full of healthy goodies will motivate you into sticking with your diet.

Discover The 7 Amazing Benefits of Paleo Diet Cookbooks

To give you an overview, the Paleo diet is a nutrition program that closely resembles the diet of our Paleolithic ancestors. There are several books and studies about this type of diet. Advocates of the Paleo nutrition contend that the diet of Stone Age cavemen consisted primarily of proteins and fats. These gave them enough energy and nourishment that enabled them to build strong and trimmed muscles. The basic nutrition of Paleolithic humans also helped them to avoid affluence or lifestyle diseases which are very common nowadays.

Unfortunately, it is not easy to follow the original diet of our Paleolithic ancestors. That is because modern staples have generally relied on grain-based, poultry-supplied, and processed foods. And these foods are not included in Paleo nutrition. So it is not surprising to see some people experiencing difficulties in following the Paleo diet.

If you are planning to start a diet based on Paleolithic nutrition, then you need a comprehensive cookbook that will help you to prepare your food. Here are some of the most important benefits that you can enjoy if you have handy Paleo recipes.

The Paleo Dieter Eats Breakfast

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Breakfast is fairly easy to do Paleo - with plenty of eggs and meats to choose from, making a scramble is quick and easy. One of my favorites I call the Frasier breakfast - tossed salad and scrambled eggs (from the Frasier Show theme song).

The Paleo Dieter Eats Breakfast

Another way is to take leftover veggies and sauté them then add your beaten eggs. Either let them set-up (or stick under the broiler) for frittata or stir them up for a paleo version of Migas.

If you eat bacon or ham (with no nitrates, from organically feed animals), you can fry up the meat and cook eggs in the fat. Very tasty!

And, there's always the power smoothie:

Packed with good fats, proteins, antioxidants and flavor, very satisfying and will keep you going for hours. The possibilities are plentiful; don't limit yourself to the basic egg white protein powder and banana. You can throw into the blender:

Coconut milk, usually a whole can, some coconut cream if you want extra calories and flavor.

Add any whole fresh or frozen fruit. I like frozen berries either mixed or individuals: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries even cranberries (very tangy). The berries add lots of color to the smoothie and antioxidants.

Add one or two whole raw eggs. Don't worry about raw if you use free range, naturally fed organic eggs. Try some duck or ostrich eggs if you can get them from your local co-op or farmer's market. The eggs add protein and fat.

Or, add a spoonful of your favorite nut butter. It will add a subtle taste of the nut to the finished smoothie. If you want crunchy, add the whole nut instead.

Add a spoon of pure vanilla extract and, there you go!

This is a pretty simple recipe, but it's tasty, quick and powerfully good for you.

But let's be honest; sometimes you really miss pancakes. So here's a way to stay paleo and have your (pan) cakes too!

The Paleo Diet Quick Pancake Recipe:

Ingredients:

2 Large eggs
½ Cup Cashew Nut Butter
¼ Teaspoon Cinnamon
½ Cup Apple Sauce (sugarless)
½ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Coconut oil

Directions:

Combine ingredients 1 - 5 in a bowl and stir the mixture until smooth.

Add a little coconut oil to a frying pan - just enough to lightly cover the bottom. Turn the heat on medium. When the oil starts to pop (or a drop of water dances on the surface), pour the batter and spread it into a pancake shape.

Cook for a minute or two, until the edges start to brown and flip to fry the other side.

Serve with a Paleo-friendly topping of your choice (I prefer Blueberries warmed and mashed into a spread) and enjoy!

Add a Paleo breakfast beverage if you're really hungry.

Paleo Vaninut Milk Recipe:

Ingredients:

4 Cups of That Coconut Water
1 Cup Raw Almonds
A pinch of sea salt (if you still use salt)
Seeds from 1Vanilla Bean
¼ Cup of Agave Nectar or honey equivalent.

Directions:

Put the coconut water and almonds in a blender and run on high until the mixture looks smooth. Use a nut-milk bag or cheesecloth and strain the mixture, disposing of the pulp.

Return the strained milk mixture to the blender and add the sea salt, vanilla bean seeds, and agave nectar and blend at high speed until smooth.

Can a Healthy Diet Recipe Actually Taste Good?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

If your idea of "health food" is a simple green salad, then you haven't been eating the right kinds of foods. By using a healthy diet recipe book and trying out many recipes, you will find that you can eat healthy and tasty at the same time.

Can a Healthy Diet Recipe Actually Taste Good?

The benefits of any healthy meal plan are many, but for most people it is the weight loss that it promises that urges them to make the switch. It is certainly true that by removing processed foods from your diet, you will see immediate weight loss. It is actually hard to keep weight on when you are eating natural, healthy foods and cooking them the right way.

The truth is that if you go on a calorie-restricted diet, you will not have a fun time. You will constantly crave foods that you can't eat because your body won't be getting either the number of calories or the nutrition that it requires. However, when you switch to a healthy recipe plan, you will find that your cravings are gone and that you feel fuller than ever before. Losing weight on this kind of diet is easy.

That being said, the advantages of a healthy diet recipe plan go well beyond losing weight. In fact, the primary purpose of any healthy diet should be to put your entire body back into balance. With the amount of processed foods we eat these days, not to mention our stressful lifestyles, it is no wonder that so many of us are unhealthy. By eliminating toxins, chemicals, additives, colorings, and artificial flavorings from your foods, you will find that not only does food taste better, but that you lose weight, too. A healthy meal plan really does give you the best of both worlds and is something your family will appreciate.

Apple Diet - It Works For Weight Loss, But Beware of 1 Version Of This Diet

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Ever hear of the apple diet? It's a popular weight loss diet that has numerous versions and spin-offs. A lot of these versions are healthy and work for weight loss, however 1 version you must absolutely avoid.

Apple Diet - It Works For Weight Loss, But Beware of 1 Version Of This Diet

First, why the apple diet works...

A big reason on why the apple diet works has to do with the high water content and high amount of fiber in each apple. The high water content allows you to "eat water" basically. The foods you mostly "eat water" with are generally low in calories, but very filling. For example, a 300-calorie candy bar won't fill you up, but 300-calories worth of apples will.

Another reason why the apple diet works is because each apple has 5 grams of fiber in it. It has both soluble and insoluble fiber. Having a high fiber intake is a big part of successful long term weight loss programs.

The average American only gets about 12 grams of fiber each day. It's recommended that you get 25 grams of fiber each day. I, however, advocate getting 35-50 grams of fiber each day for easy long term weight loss.

There are 2 rules to the apple diet...

Rule #1: Eat 1 apple before each meal

This is the main rule. Very simple, huh?

Just eat 1 apple before each of 3 meals. Nothing more. I won't even tell you to stop eating your favorite foods. Obviously, if you eat a little bit more healthy, you'll increase the speed in which you lose weight... but I won't force you to eat healthier.

Rule #2: Don't forget rule #1

Seriously, there is just 1 rule to the apple diet. However I want to add that I've found that my clients who have tried the apple diet get better results simply by following rule #1 and eating healthy snacks.

That's all you need to change in your diet... eat an apple before each of 3 meals... and eat healthy snacks. You can continue to eat more unhealthy type of foods for your meals. Just don't eat unhealthy snacks!

So, if you want an easy weight loss plan that isn't complicated and doesn't require much thinking on your part, try the apple diet.
