Post Workout Primal/Paleo Low Carb Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

The brilliance behind this smoothie is the use of shredded coconut vs coconut milk. I seem to not do as well on coconut milk so I prefer shredded if it will blend well. It does not blend 100% in this blender but I enjoy the little amounts of "pulp" that remain. Shredded coconut (9 cents per 100 calories) is a lot cheaper than coconut milk (25 cents per 100 calories) if you buy on Amazon.

Post Workout Primal/Paleo Low Carb Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

The whey is the protein and the coconut is the fat. The 1/2 banana adds a little sweetness with some carbs while the stevia adds more sweetness to make it just right with zero added carbs. The cacao powder adds a nice chocolate flavor and a host of antioxidants to boost.

Post Workout Primal Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

  • 2 oz water
  • 1.5 scoops Whey - .90
  • 1/4 C shredded coconut - .13
  • 1/2 banana - 2.65 oz - .13
  • 2 t cacao powder - .08
  • 2 drops stevia - .02
  • 1/2 c ice

Total cost is .26 for a 378 calorie smoothie. That's inexpensive by my standards!

I actually used 4 oz of water but it was slightly too diluted. Try 2 oz and add a touch if you find the consistency to be too creamy. Each person has their own consistency preference so alter it to your own liking.

Macro nutrient Breakdown

  • Calories: 378
  • Protein: 41 grams - 13%
  • Carbs: 26 grams - 18%
  • Fat: 16 grams - 70%
  • 0.2 grams of Polyunsaturated Fat (this is very key!)

This smoothie is easy to make, very nutritional, high protein, high fat and semi low carb. Enjoy without any guilt after a strength training workout if you desire. This is what I did. Let me know what you think of the recipe in the comment section.

Why Drink Primal Smoothies?

They are fast. Simple. Healthy. If you have a recipe to follow then making it should take less than 5 minutes every single time. If you are in a super hurry then you can drink the smoothie on the go without causing any trouble.

In addition, your body is able to absorb more nutrients since the blender has ground all of the food up. Digestion improves and you are well on your way to a healthy and vibrant day! Primal smoothies, the ones I make, will not harm your blood sugar in any way unlike the fruit smoothies. You will also build muscle and lose fat.

The Paleo Diet for Weight Loss

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Two hundred thousand years ago humans thrived on a paleolithic diet. They were healthy and thin, and their bodies were efficient in running, hunting, fighting sickness, and processing the foods they ate. They evolved on a diet that kept them at their peak physical state, trim and energized to face the dangers of their world. Now modern humans can lose extra weight and get back to their peak physique just by giving their body the paleolithic nutrition that it craves.

The Paleo Diet for Weight Loss

For this caveman diet, humans hunted their meat, picked fruits and nuts off of trees, vegetables and berries from bushes and vines, and dug tubers from the ground. They had not yet learned to tame wild beasts and herd their meats. They knew nothing of milk and cream. They had not yet learned to turn their spears into plows to till the land and plant fields of grain. They ate what they could hunt and gather, and from that paleo diet they were lean and fit and healthy.

Today fields of grain wave for endless miles, only to be processed beyond recognition before it reaches any dinner table. Genetically engineered seeds wipe out native varieties. Sugars and flours dominate every meal. Corn syrup invades every drink. Rare are humans familiar with the taste of simple, fresh water. Rare are humans who eat fit, paleolithic nutrition, a primal diet that suits their evolutionary needs. Yet among these rare few a slim, trim, fit and healthy body is not rare at all, but simply normal.

Today there is a whole category of foodstuffs humans never had before, so prevalent that they categorized and named it, dairy. This is no paleolithic diet, no Neanderthal diet, it is simply unnatural. No wonder humans are growing fat and unhealthy from childhood on. The grains, dairy, and processing of all foods is more than their bodies can bear. If they returned to their natural, native paleolithic nutrition they could shed their extra weight and improve their overall health.

Today there is also heart failure, diabetes, cancer. Cholesterol clogs blood vessels and causes strokes and heart attacks. Sensitivities and allergies have grown to life threatening proportions. It can sometimes seem as if all of nature is turning against human existence. Nothing is guaranteed safe. Yet there is little in the original paleolithic diet that follows that trend. The natural nutrition in the paleo diet keeps a human thin and fit.

The original hunter gatherer diet of lean meat and nature's unmodified bounty can sustain, and even heal human biology. The stone age diet strengthens what the modern diet destroys. The paleo diet brings human physiology down to the correct weight, and with less fat in the body and better nutrition in the food, the slimmer human body is more efficient and healthy, besides being more trim and beautiful.

Many people have found a more youthful weight and body style, as well as new life from this paleo diet of fruits, nuts, natural vegetation and lean meat. Paleo diet recipes are simple and delicious, easy to make and to eat.Not only is the food less processed before being sold to the public, it needs less processing in the kitchen before it is eaten. It's less work for more weight loss and greater fitness, an all-around winner.

Many also exercise in paleolithic manner, with running and sprinting and actions to simulate the action of hunting, to bring the heart rate up quickly, let it rest, and bring it back up again. This is the same workout used by athletes, and the paleo diet for athletes provides the right nutrition for athletic exercise. Between the primal diet and primal exercise, humans are losing weight, getting trim, and rising again to optimal health and fitness.

The paleo diet and exercise are the modern human response to food creation that has gone awry, and harms as well as sustains. The paleo diet can help them get trim and hale. Humans deserve what they once had, a lean and fit body due to the natural diet that helps them to keep trim, slim, and handsome. They deserve the paleo diet and exercise that enhances and empowers them to look, feel, and be the optimal form of biological machine that they evolved to be.

How to Make the Best Meal You Have Never Had (And It's Healthy Too)

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

For those of you that know me, you know that I'm always trying to eat healthy whenever I can. I don't always do but I try. Recently I have really been trying really extra hard. Nevertheless, I always manage to slip up because let's face it - healthy food tastes like crap.

How to Make the Best Meal You Have Never Had (And It's Healthy Too)

When I mean healthy I mean a modified version of the Paleo Diet. I try not to eat processed foods which basically means anything man made. No sugar. And I try not to eat grain because it contains an evil protein called gluten that does some nasty things to your body. This means I can't eat bread and that really limits the meals I can have.

Basically I try and eat like a caveman. But like I said - this is not an easy thing to stick to. Especially since I'm not supposed to drink beer.

Through my efforts I have discovered that grass-fed beef is insanely good for you. It is one of the most nutrient dense foods you can shove down your mouth. Grass-fed beef is exactly what you think it is - cow that eats grass. All other cattle are fed grains unless otherwise specified. And no, "natural diet" does not mean grass-fed.

Right now most of my meals consist of some kind of grass-fed meat - whether it is steak or ground beef. I'll also have some chicken once in awhile and I wish I liked fish. So you can see I am pretty limited variety wise here and although eating steak is delicious - it does get a little tiresome after awhile.

This has forced me to get creative with the things I cook. But finally, through many months of experimentation, I have created a dish that not only is really healthy but is extremely tasty as well. It can be done!

I call it "Ryan's Bad Ass Bowl of Beef". (Hmmmm there is a joke in there somewhere)

It's a variation of a picadillo meal I learned how to cook in high school - and it is super easy to make.

Here is what you will need:

* 2 lbs Grass-fed ground beef

* A jar of Boscoli Family Jalapeno Olive Salad

* An onion (I just use a bag of frozen onions)

And that's it. I told you it was easy. I purchased all of these items at Whole Foods.

1. First start off by putting a little bit of olive oil in a pan and start browning the ground beef on medium heat.

2. While you are letting the ground beef brown it's time to work on the onions. Get another pan, throw some olive oil in it and turn it up to high.

3. When the oil starts smoking throw in the onions. (Be careful of the oil that might splatter once the onions hit the hot pan.)

4. Caramelize the onions by cooking them until they are a nice light golden brown color. (You will know when they are almost done when all the water from them has evaporated and they start sticking a little to the pan.)

5. Once the ground beef is a nice brown color - turn down the heat and add the onions.

6. Next add from anywhere 4 - 7 tablespoons of the jalapeno olive salad (I add a lot. I really love that stuff) to the ground beef.

7. Stir it up a little bit and you are done.

And Viola. You now have a great tasting meal that is actually good for you.

Damn I'm hungry.

- Ryan

Your 'New' Old Fashioned Diet - Paleo Recipies

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Living the 'Old Fashioned' Way

Your 'New' Old Fashioned Diet - Paleo Recipies

Great grandma baked her own bread and grew her own vegetables. She canned what she grew for winter's consumption and when there was chicken for dinner, it came from the shed in the back yard. She didn't have a huge grocery bill because she made all the food from things she raised and grew. She raised chickens for their meat and eggs. The family cow provided her with milk, cream and butter. The children were sent to the woods for blueberries for pies. An apple tree and maybe a peach or pear tree also provided the ingredients for pies and jam. If she needed pocket money, she sold some of the eggs or vegetables she didn't need.

Grandma never dieted a day in her life. She had no 'labor-saving' devices and had to prepare all the meals from scratch. She also maintained a slim figure well into old age. By her standards, we have it soooo easy.

And because we have it easy, we eat too much, we don't get enough exercise, and we complain all the time.

When I was in my 20's and 30's I could eat several thousand calories a day and still lose weight. Today I have to watch every mouthful and I still have trouble with my weight. This isn't only because I exercise less, but most of the food I purchase has been processed in one or more ways.

Cattle and chickens are fed processed feeds; plants are chemically fertilized and fruit and vegetables picked long before they are ripe, and then exposed to gasses to ripen them.

When was the last time you had a peach or an apple as large as a softball... juicy and flavorful; or an orange picked from the tree in the evening and refrigerated, squeezed in the morning for breakfast. Salad picked fresh from the garden, tomatoes still warm from the sun. Sweet corn should be eaten within 12 hours of being picked, preferably it should be picked and eaten within 6 hours. How long before you bought your corn do you imagine it was picked? Out of season it could have been 2 or more days... all the nutrients are gone.

Farm stands offer an alternative to the supermarket. The vegetables are naturally grown and you can purchase as much or as little as you need. For the shopper who wants the best quality early morning is the best time to buy. There's no substitute for fresh sweet corn on the cob.

Today you can also find plans for a 'pocket garden' on your patio or porch. Hanging planters and window boxes offer a way to provide some fresh vegetables for the city dweller. Gardens can provide not only beauty but health as well.

I have found some ideas that you could use to improve your diet and health. For those of you that have never tried growing vegetables, a new experience awaits you. And if you don't succeed at first... try again. It's worth it... trust me.

Caveman Diet Explained - What Is The Caveman Diet?

Caveman Diet

Caveman Diet Explained - What Is The Caveman Diet?

Finding a diet that is both healthy, and sustainable is not an easy task. Although many fad diets will make endless promises, many have little to no scientific or nutritional basis. There is one diet that is gaining in popularity, and actually has the support of experts from both the nutrition and science communities. This diet is the Paleo Diet, often referred to as the Caveman Diet, and has been developed and perfected based on the research findings of leading scientists.

Caveman Diet History

The Caveman Diet has actually been around for decades, having first been introduced in the mid '70s. It is based primarily on the diet of our ancient ancestors stemming back to the Paleolithic era. Although the diet has had a variety of critics, it differs from other diets in that it has been supported by the research findings of some of the greatest experts in the fields of science and nutrition. Furthermore, many of these experts now follow the Paleo Diet themselves. With the growing popularity of the Caveman Diet, these experts are not the only ones now following the diet. Many top athletes have switched to the Paleo Diet with great results.

What Is The Caveman Diet?

Now that you have a better idea as to the scientific foundations of the Caveman Diet, and its recent growth in popularity among the healthiest of individuals, you are probably wondering what actually comprises the diet. The Paleo, or Caveman Diet promotes the eating of lean meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables, and discourages a high intake of carbohydrate heavy foods that stem from wheat, rice, and corn. The belief is that, because agriculture did not surface until after the Paleolithic era, the human body has not had sufficient time to adapt to eating grains, such as wheat, rice, and corn. Scientists have found that, because the human body has not fully grown accustomed to such foods, they tend to increase the rate of health problems and disease. Although the Paleo Diet doesn't entirely eliminate the intake of foods rich in carbohydrates, it does encourage you to moderately reduce the amount of grains that you eat each day.

How is the Caveman Diet Different from the Atkin's Diet?

One of the most popular diets in the last twenty years was the Atkin's Diet. This diet, which has since proven to be unhealthy, encouraged its followers to avoid any kind of starch-heavy carbohydrate as a means to losing weight. Thus, many followers of the Atkin's Diet completely eliminated any form of complex carbohydrates from their diet, substituting them for more meat. Unfortunately, fatty meats were often used, causing liver problems for some, and limited results for many more.

The Paleo Diet, on the other hand, does not encourage one to completely eliminate wheat, rice, and corn from their diet, but to moderately reduce them. In fact, experts state that there are actually particular times when eating those foods is encouraged. The Caveman Diet also is very specific that you don't eat any and all kinds of meat, but rather the healthier lean meats, as well as fish. By eating lean meats and fish, you'll gain the necessary proteins, healthy fats, and Omega 3s that are necessary for a healthy lifestyle.

Conclusion

Dieting does not mean losing weight in an unhealthy manner, but rather changing your eating habits to be healthier and to feel better. The Paleo Diet has proven, through both results, and scientific research and data, to be effective and healthy. By following the Caveman Diet, and "eating like a caveman," you'll find yourself with more energy, and the confidence that your new lifestyle is not a fad, but rather an improved way of living and eating. You'll still be able to eat your favorite dishes, and while they'll be slightly modified according to their Caveman Diet recipes, they'll taste better than ever.

How Easy Is It to Make a Paleo Meal?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Paleo meals are very easy to make which is why shifting to this diet is not an extraordinary transformation. Preparing a Paleo meal is not far from preparing a regular meal, the only difference is in the ingredients that you use but once you already have Paleo foods and have gotten rid of what is not allowed in the diet, you will have a much easier time.

How Easy Is It to Make a Paleo Meal?

One of the things making the Paleo diet so easy is that there is no need to count or measure anything. Just as long as your pantry is stocked with Paleo foods and ingredients, it will be just like preparing a usual, traditional meal. Stocking your pantry with Paleo approved foods and getting rid of those that aren't allowed is one way to keep yourself on the track of a Paleo diet. This means that you won't have to resist temptations nor commit the mistake of eating what is not allowed in the diet.

Here are some tips when preparing Paleo meals:

Salads - salads are very easy to make, they do not require much skill and they are really fast to prepare, too. If you want a fresh garden salad, you don't need to cook anything. All you have to do is chop up vegetables, whip up a dressing, toss them together and you've already got yourself a healthy meal.

If you want a meal but you don't feel like a salad is enough; you can grill, bake or sauté some white chicken meat to make your meal heavier. If you want some extra crunch, you can even add some nuts to your salad to add some texture.

Entrees - The possibilities of a Paleo entrée are just as diverse as your usual non-diet entrée. As we have discussed, just as long as you have a Paleo-proof pantry, your culinary imagination can take you everywhere. One of the easiest entrees to prepare that doesn't need chef skills is vegetables with meat, chicken or fish. You can bake, pan-fry, grill; or in the case of fish, steam these sources of protein with some herbs and spices to taste. Then all you need to add are steamed or sautéed vegetables and you've got yourself a meal good enough to be served in restaurants.

Paleo entrees are not limited to only these. You can do as much in the Paleo diet as you can in the traditional culinary world.

Desserts - A Paleo dessert definitely consists of some or a kind of fruit. It can even be as simple as serving mixed fruits with some sauce like berries with wine reduction. Fruits alone are already desserts because they are sweet and can cleanse the palette after every meal. If you find this boring, you don't have to worry because Paleo desserts are just as interesting as the desserts that you find in pastry shops. There are more interesting and complex desserts that you can find in Paleo cookbooks or on the internet.

Paleo recipes are not limited to the ones discussed above. There are recipes all over the internet and in Paleo books as well. As I have said, the possibilities are endless so enjoy exploring the culinary world of the Paleo diet.

Some existing gluten based recipes will not work with gluten free ingredients. This is why cookbooks such as Paleo Cookbook are so helpful. There are many options for gluten free desserts available.

Gluten is a food protein, which is commonly found in wheat, rye, and barley. This means that sweet foods such as cake or cookies are not allowed when you are on a gluten free diet, unless you get creative that is. Normal wheat flour can often be easily substituted with potato flour or rice flour. Yeast is a big no-no for baking so how do you get bread to rise? Another substitute! Agar-agar or whipped egg whites can have the same effect of trapping air inside the food in the same way that yeast allows baked foods to rise.

Although it is difficult to start a gluten free diet, it is not impossible. With the right food knowledge, and knowing what to substitute in your dessert foods, you will be able to be healthier and happier in your life. With substituting ingredients, your favorite baked goodies can still taste great.

Successfully Losing Weight With the Paleo

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Paleolitic diets aren't easy, but with a little bit of planning and determination, you'll make the most out of it in no time. Read more to learn how.

Successfully Losing Weight With the Paleo

If you haven't heard of the Paleo diet yet, it's a kind of approach wherein you get to burn fat and lose weight without having to count your calories to the dot. The catch, however, is that it's going to take a lot of getting used to. It's not something you can do just like that. Otherwise, everybody would have done it already.

Your first tip is to plan ahead. Learn more about the details of Paleo and what the approach is like. By then you would know that you'd have to get rid of anything but natural that's on your kitchen cupboards. Make plans on how you're going to cook all those extra meals so that you won't have problems dealing with hunger pangs later - it's what's going to save you from the temptation of eating anything outside the Paleo diet.

Thus, you need to read your nutritional labels. Anything that has a box or container with a label on it means that you have to read it, lest you end up accidentally consuming something that's not meant to be in your diet. Besides, known what exactly you're putting in your body makes you feel assured that you're not botching your own diet. You don't have to read the labels right down to how many calories each container has, but you should at least know whether the stuff you're eating has additives or other ingredients that are against your Paleo diet. Watch out for anything not natural.

Remember, nobody's going to be tracking your diet but you, so don't think about cheating your own diet. You're only cheating yourself and you'll suffer the consequences alone. Keep your eye on the goal and learn to say no to those cravings. Also, keep in mind that if you give in to these cravings just once, you're going to doom yourself to giving in to more cravings in the future. Thus, say no to these cravings once, and you're most likely going to be saying no to them forever. Be proud to be a picky eater.

But what happens if things go wrong? Then pick yourself up! There's no point in moping about sneaking in something sinful or two. The best thing you can do right now is to go on and make sure things don't go from bad to worse. Don't punish yourself by doing double time on your workout to burn that extra fat - that's not how Paleo works. Just go on as usual.

And lastly, be creative! The food you eat in a Paleo diet doesn't have to be bland. There are lots of recipes out there that are Paleo approved which are good for you. Enjoy!

Red Potato Recipes - Easy Potato Recipes

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

I love red potatoes because they are so versatile, not mention all the vitamins that go into your meal when you add the red potato as a side dish. The white potato itself, red skin or otherwise, boasts almost half the daily requirement of vitamin C and over 600 mg of potassium. One of the big questions when preparing potatoes is always the same "To peel or not to peel?" The choice is totally up to you, but if you eat potatoes with the skin on you are adding about 2 grams of fiber per serving. Mom would be so proud! Just remember to hold the potato under cool water while using a vegetable brush to clean the skin really well before cooking. Below are a few of my favorite red potato recipes and I have even added a couple of variations.

Red Potato Recipes - Easy Potato Recipes

Easy Steak Fries:
*preheat your oven to 350 degrees
*about 2-3 potatoes for each adult
*clean the skin or peel potatoes and pat dry
*cut each potato into 4 wedges
*place in a large bowl and drizzle generously with olive oil, salt and pepper
*toss to make sure all potatoes are coated well
*for easy clean up line a cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper
*place potatoes on paper-lined cookie sheet for about 20 minutes, then turn and cook an additional 15-20 minutes.
*Potatoes are done when they are firm to the touch and start to brown.
*Serve with ketchup or your favorite dip

(variation) instead of salt and pepper use fresh or ground rosemary

Yummy Mashed Potatoes
*In a 2 1/2 to 3 qt pot fill with enough water to cover the potatoes about 2 inches
*about 2-3 potatoes for each adult
*clean the skin or peel potatoes
*quarter potatoes and then cut each quarter in half (you should have chunks of potatoes)
*boil potatoes on medium-high until tender, then drain water (about 20 minutes)
*put potatoes back on a very low fire
*use a potato masher to smash the potatoes, then stir with a whisk, or fork or hand mixer
--FOR EVERY 6 POTATOES
*add about 1 teaspoon butter, and 1 tablespoon milk
*season with salt, pepper to taste and stir well

(variation) - add about 1 tablespoon sour cream for every 6 potatoes
(variation) - add about 1/8 cup cheese for every 6 potatoes-whatever kind you like, cheddar, american, colby...
(variation) - add about 1/2 clove garlic for every 6 potatoes and put the garlic in the pot when you first put the potatoes in

The possibilities are endless with red potato recipes and that is the good thing. There is very little stress. If you are in a hurry when trying these red potato recipes, just skip the skinning process. Give them a good scrub and start cooking. Keep them on-hand for a quick, nutritious meal anytime, day or night.

Easy BBQ Ribs Recipe

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

The summer is a perfect BBQ time across the US. BBQ is a great crowd pleaser and is sure to bring the family together. Here is an easy BBQ ribs recipe and some quick tips to make sure your BBQ experience is safe and fun.

Easy BBQ Ribs Recipe

First, to keep things safe:

1. Defrost meat before cooking so you get even cooking and do it in the fridge.

2. Marinate food in the refrigerator and don't reuse the marinade unless you boil it first

3. Do not serve cooked meat in the same plate you had the raw meat (unless you clean it before re-using it)

4. Don't bring out the meat until you are ready to cook to avoid leaving it a prolonged time in hot temperatures before cooking.

Make sure you follow the safety tips and you will have more fun during the summer cookouts. My summer is going great. BBQ's are a big reason for that. One of my favorite dishes is an easy BBQ Ribs recipe. To make great ribs easily we need to follow these tips:

1. Marinade the meat or rub in the seasonings at least 1 hr before cooking more is better but if it's done too long, unless it's a tough cut, you could overpower the meat. Anywhere from one to six hours is good enough.

2. Grill ribs bone side down until the bones start to separate from the meat without turning. This is a key point that helps produce tender ribs.

3. Brush BBQ sauce or any sauce that has sugar only at the tail end of cooking.

4. Allow the ribs to sit for 10 minutes before eating or cutting this helps the meat stay juicy.

5. Use tongs to handle the meat forks will pierce the meat and allow the juices to escape. Piercing the meat reduces the flavor and moisture of the meat.

You can try this tips this weekend or the next time you grill ribs and you will see and taste the difference. In order to do that you need this simple recipe that's great tasting:

6 pounds pork spareribs

1 tblsp red pepper flakes

2 tblsp Adobo or Seasoned Salt

1 tsp fresh ground black pepper ( use less to taste if using adobo)

A barbecue sauce you like

Combine red pepper flakes, Adobo and black pepper. Rub mixture all over ribs; cover ribs and marinate in refrigerator at least 2 hours. Grill ribs over low heat, bone side down until the meat separates from the bone, approximately 1 hour. Apply your favorite barbecue sauce and cook for another 15 to 30 minutes turning the ribs frequently to avoid burning the sauce. Serves 6 to 8.

There you have it an easy BBQ ribs recipe and some tips to make sure you wow your family and guests.

Easy Quinoa Breakfast Recipes

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

There are plenty of easy quinoa breakfast recipes that you can find online but I'll only share 3 of my favorites. Quinoa is so versatile that you can practically add anything to it without overpowering the other ingredients.

Easy Quinoa Breakfast Recipes

One of my favorite breakfast recipes is the nutty cinnamon quinoa recipe. You will need a cup of low fat milk or skim milk, a cup of water, a cup of quinoa (well-rinsed), 2 cups fresh blueberries or strawberries, ½ teaspoon finely ground cinnamon, 1/3 cup chopped pecans (or any nut that you prefer) and 4 teaspoons organic nectar.

This is so easy to make, all you have to do is boil the milk, water and quinoa in a saucepan over high heat and then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until most the liquid is absorbed. Turn off the heat and set it aside for 5 minutes while covered. Mix in cinnamon and blueberries and top with the chopped nuts. Drizzle with nectar and serve.

Another easy quinoa breakfast recipe that I like is the hot quinoa breakfast cereal. You will only need a cup of cooked quinoa, thinly sliced apples, seedless raisins, dash of cinnamon, milk and honey. Mix all the dry ingredients together and serve with milk. You can add honey or low-calorie sugar to taste.

The last easy quinoa breakfast recipe that I found is the peanut butter quinoa recipe. For the ingredients, you need a cup of quinoa, 2 to 3 tablespoons of butter, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 cup of milk, roasted pecans, raisins or dried cranberries and any fruits of your choice (bananas, strawberries, peaches).

Boil the quinoa with milk, sugar, cinnamon sticks and peanut butter. Reduce the heat to low until the milk is absorbed. Set it aside and cover it for 5 minutes. Add all the ingredients and serve. Now that's easy right?

The Dangers of Soy and Some Great Soy Alternatives

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

In the vast sea of processed foods, soy is found as an ingredient in many foods. Are we better off with it or without it? And is soy really so dangerous?

The Dangers of Soy and Some Great Soy Alternatives

Soy has been around for centuries and centuries. It is known as shoyu in Japan, and later adapted to the word "soy" that we currently use.

Before it was a source of food, the soy crop was revered in Asia and used to fix nitrogen in the soil when rotating crops.

Soy was not eaten until the Chou Dynasty, when fermenting techniques were discovered. It was made into foods like miso, natto, and soy sauce. Historically, the Chinese did not eat a lot of soy that was unfermented. Even today, unfermented soy is not a large mainstay of the Asian diet, and is often eaten with meat and fish broths, which helps to counteract the harmful effects of soy on the body.

After the early 1900s, soy became a major crop in the United States. However, it did not become a source of food until the 1920s. Growing soy was especially important after World War I and during the Great Dustbowl. It was used to help fix the soil in order to reestablish huge crops in the Mid-East areas of the United States (remember... it has awesome nitrogen-fixing properties). From 1932-1933 Henry Ford spent about ,250,000.00 on soybean research. It was used to make paint and oil with for his car company, Ford Motor Company. Ford even hired chemists to make silk out of soy, called Azlon (although Dupont came along and took over the market with their version of "faux-silk," called polyester).

From there, soy took off as a food ingredient, first being used to make ice cream and non-dairy whipped cream. Now, it is prevalent in everything from chocolate to processed grain-cereals. In fact, soy is found in many processed foods, both Organic and Conventional. It is well-known as the main ingredient in infant formulas and protein drinks.

But Hey, What's the Problem With Soy?

A lot is wrong with soy. Although this "miracle-bean" is touted as a factor in longevity and heart-disease prevention, it comes with many more risks than so-called benefits. The dangers of soy are many:

Phytic Acid in Soy

Soy contains Phytic Acid. Phytic Acid in soy cannot be neutralized (like it can in some grains, seeds and nuts) by being soaked in an acidic medium. Phytic acid is also not neutralized when soy is cooked or during its processing. Phytic Acid is an enzyme-inhibitor. And what it does is block mineral absorption in the digestive tract. That means when eating soy, you block your body's ability to absorb calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and copper. A mineral deficiency contributes to a variety of health problems, not limited to growth problems in children, immune development and thyroid disease. Only fermentation will neutralize Phytic Acid in soy.

Goitrogens

Okay, I bet you may not have heard of this one. And the risk with ingesting too many goitrogens (which are plentiful in soy), is it suppresses the thyroid. This can lead to weight gain, fatigue, inability to concentrate, decreased focus, feeling cold all the time, and so much more. Don't take your thyroid gland for granted, because once you start to have problems here, the road to recovery can be long and agonizing (I know).

Phytoestrogens

Back in the olden days, phytoestrogens were believed to be a woman's BFF (Best Friend Forever). Soy was the super-duper magic elixir that could help a woman with her hormones. Phytoestrogens mimic estrogen. Independent research (NOT sponsored by the soy industry) shows that high estrogen is related to breast cancer, infertility and low libido in women. Add soy to the diet and you get even more of that.

How Very Convenient, But The Dangers of Soy Don't Stop There...

Manufacturing soy is a huge ordeal; made up of lots of processes. Here is what happens when one of the most common food ingredients, soy protein isolate is made:

  • After the bulk of a soy crop is solvent-extracted with hexane...
  • Soy protein isolate is taken as a byproduct from the manufacturing of soybean oil.
  • After being subjected to series of alkaline and acidic washes, it is spray-dried to become a powder (which ends up in "diet" protein powders and baby formula).
  • During the spray-drying process, carcinogenic nitrates are formed.
  • MSG is generally added to TVP(made via a high-temperature process), which gives it a "meaty" flavor and masks the bean taste. TVP is used as "fake meat" in many health food products.
  • Also present in soy (even after the high temperature process), is trypsin inhibitor, which makes it necessary for farm animals that consume soy-based products to be given lysine supplements. Humans who eat soy can also become deficient in lysine, but we generally don't hear about supplementation for that.

Other Side Effects of Soy (Wait! You Mean There's More?!)

Yes.

GMO Soy

What exactly is GMO soy?

77% of the soy grown worldwide is known as a Genetically Modified Organism. In the United States, 93% of the soy grown is considered GMO. This means that the soy seed has been genetically modified (in most cases) to be able to withstand huge amounts of the glyphosate or glufosinate herbicides. When you ingest soy that is NOT organic, you ingest these herbicides.

Glyphosate (used in Monsanto's Roundup) has been associated with a host of deformities in lab animals, and of course, large doses of it will cause serious injury or death to an adult. Initial exposure can lead to rashes, nausea, sore throat, difficulty breathing, headaches, lethargy and nosebleeds. Long term human studies have shown more increased risks of the cancer non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, miscarriages, and attention deficit disorder with this herbicide.

Glufosinatekills plants by inhibiting the enzyme glutamine synthetase (try saying that 5 times really quicly), an enzyme also found in animals including humans. In lab animals, particularly dogs, glufosinate caused heart and circulatory failure (within two weeks of ingesting). Other lab animals had higher rates of miscarriages, premature delivery, convulsions, diarrhea, and aggressiveness.

Please understand that A LOT of these two herbicides can be sprayed on GMO soy to discourage weed growth. GMO soy will contain traces of these herbicides. It cannot be washed off. IF you are going to consume soy, make sure you consume organic soy.

One more problem with GMO soy is that the soy has been genetically modified and long term studies on the effects of this on humans has not been studied extensively. The future implications on our society could be serious.

Last, But Not Least...

Soy allergies are highly common (along with milk, wheat, egg and nut allergies).

Soy allergies symptoms include:

According to the Mayo Clinic, "Soy allergies can include:

  • Tingling in the mouth
  • Hives, itching or itchy, scaly skin (eczema)
  • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat, or other parts of the body
  • Wheezing, runny nose or trouble breathing
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
  • Redness of the skin (flushing)"

The Mayo Clinic also states:

"Soy allergy in infants often begins with the introduction of a soy-based formula. Soy allergy may develop when a child is switched to a soy-based formula after an allergic reaction to a milk-based formula." source: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/soy-allergy/DS00970/DSECTION=symptoms

So...IF you are not going to (or cannot) breastfeed your baby and he or she must have formula, please take a look at these natural infant formulas at:

http://www.westonaprice.org/childrens-health/recipes-for-homemade-baby-formula

Now...there are soy alternatives that you can use in your diet, whether you are eating a Vegan diet, a Paleo diet or anywhere in between.

Here's How You Avoid Soy and What You Can Eat Instead of Soy:

Check all labels. Soy is in many, many processed foods. Manufacturers will generally state on the label that the food product contains soy, but the best way to avoid it is to cook from scratch. It is known as "soy lecithin," "soya," "hydrolyzed soy protein," "soy protein isolate" or "soy." It can even be used as a "natural preservative."

Alternate milk sources:

Cow's Milk

Goat's Milk

Almond Milk

Rice Milk

Coconut Milk

Hemp Milk

All of these "milks" are guaranteed to be at the health food store and are becoming very common at regular grocery stores, as well. You can even make your own milks with nothing more than a blender and a coffee filter. Homemade coconut milk and almond milk are very nutritious. If you are interested in making these milks (it's pretty simple to do), you can "Google" it.

Alternative Protein Sources:

Whey protein

Meat (of any kind)

Eggs (super-easy to make)

Spirulina

Pea (sold as drink powders)

Rice (sold as drink powders)

Dairy Products

I thrive on a diet with adequate meat, and sometimes I'll cook up some extra hamburger (or something else) ahead of time for those times when I really, really need some protein. I add it to salads, to mix into a veggie stir-fry, or whatever else. I also like to keep some hardboiled eggs in the fridge for an "on-the-go" snack. Of course, protein powders are handy too...

Fermented Soy Products. Now, these soy-containing foods are okay to eat. In fact, not only are they okay to eat, but because they are fermented (and contain LOTS of beneficial lactobacilli), fermented soy products can be a very important part of your diet. Here's what they are:

Tamari Sauce

Natto

Fermented Bean Paste

Tempeh

Miso

One of my favorite things to eat (especially first thing in the morning), is chicken broth with miso paste mixed in. I add ½ teaspoon of miso paste to one cup of chicken broth. Miso can be quite salty tasting (so watch out!); add it a little bit at a time to taste. You can start out slowly...

Snacks. There quite a few snacks out there that contain soy. Some of these are made purely of soy (or have LOTS of it in there). If you are avoiding soy entirely, watch out for chocolate chips or chocolate (soy lecithin is usually in chocolate). Haha, chocolate is the trickiest one of all, I think...Here's where I have found soy-free chocolate:

SomeWhole Foods brand organic chocolate bars

Enjoy Life makes chocolate without soy in it (but still look at the labels)

Paleo Lunch

Paleo Lunch Ideas

Ideal Paleo lunch options are easy to prepare and can be packed to take to work or school. Like any other Paleo meal, the key is planning in advance. Proper planning is the essential ingredient in success with any diet.

In my household, I prefer to make double batches of every dinner. I then pack a portion for the next day's lunch and freeze the remaining for another day. If I do not have a leftover option, I opt to make an easy salad.

Here is my favorite salad recipe:

Arugula Artichoke Salad

1/3 pound fresh arugula

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

1/3 cup olive oil

3 or 4 artichoke hearts, chopped

sea salt and pepper to taste

In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice and olive oil. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Place arugula in a large bowl. Mix in artichokes and drizzle with dressing. Toss well.

Fresh lunch:

BLT Lettuce Wraps

3 slices of bacon

Sliced avocado

Chopped chicken - grilled, broiled, or rotisserie

Paleo mayo

Romaine lettuce leaves

Place ingredients in romaine leaves standing like a taco shell. Enjoy!

Here is favorite recipe for leftovers:

Fresh Herb Meatballs

1 pound ground beef

1pound ground pork

1/3 onion, minced

1/3 cup fresh basil, finely minced

1/3 cup fresh parsley, finely minced

1 cup spinach, finely minced

4 eggs

1/3 cup almond flour

1 T dried oregano

4 cloves garlic, minced

sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well to combine. You can use a food processor to chop the herbs and spinach into a finer mixture before adding to the meat, if you wish. Season with sea salt and pepper.

Make golf ball sized meatballs and place them on a baking sheet with sides. Cool for about 25 minutes or until well done.

When you find yourself struggling to find Paleo lunch ideas, turn to a great Paleo recipe book. The books with images and detailed instructions seem to be the best. There is a wide variety of meal options to choose from. If you are like me, you will not want to eat out every lunch during the work week. It is great to have Paleo friendly options available and planned before lunch time rolls around. The base of any Paleo meal, including your lunch consists of lean meats, chicken, seafood, fruits, fresh vegetables and healthy fats. Anyone can make an easy, healthy Paleo lunch.

Easy Kid Recipes For Mexican Drinks

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

Tequila, Kahlua, and margaritas are well known Mexican drinks for adults and there is also Mexican beer, hot chocolate with rum and lots of Mexican cocktails to choose from. However, what about kid recipes for Mexican drinks? What do Mexican children drink and how can you make kid recipes for Mexican drinks at home?

Easy Kid Recipes For Mexican Drinks

Popular Drinks for Children in Mexico

Commercial bottle sodas such as Coca Cola and Fanta are popular drinks in Mexico and kids also like to drink fruit juices, milk, and hot chocolate. Atole is a mixture of water, toasted ground corn tortillas, and toasted ground corn kernels. Add black corn, ground squash seed, and salt and you have a jocoatole. Chia is sweetened water with the chia herb, which is a bit like sage. Alfajor is a sweet and delicious drink made with almonds, honey, coconut and more.

Unusual Mexican Drink Recipes

More obscure drinks which can be found in Mexican bars and restaurants include sangrita (not to be confused with sangria) which is a weird sounding combination of sugar, orange juice, ground onion, chili, salt and vegetable colorant, and pozol, which is corn paste mixed in water with either salt or sugar added for flavor.

There are many kinds of Mexican drinks and these make the perfect accompaniment to authentic Mexican food recipes. You might like to try a milk based drink such as the thick, yogurt-like cuajada, if you are eating a spicy Mexican food with lots of chili in it.

Traditional Mexican drinks complement traditional Mexican foods and there are also lots of ice cold drinks to cool you down on a hot day or piping hot coffee or chocolate based drinks to warm you up on a cool evening.

Aqua Fresca -- A Very Refreshing Mexican Beverage

Mexicans love fruity drinks and these are suitable for adults and kids and great served with lots of ice for cooling you down on a hot summer day. Use a zero calorie sweetener or honey instead of the sugar if you prefer.

You can use any fruit you like to make Mexican aqua fresca, including apple, banana, peach, strawberry, cherry, kiwi fruit and watermelon. Experiment with different flavors for different results. The following recipe serves six people or three very thirsty ones.

Aqua Fresca with Fresh Fruit and Citrus Juice

You will need:

  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup sugar or equivalent honey or sweetener
  • 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice
  • 2 cups fresh fruit, peeled, de-seeded and chopped
  • Lemon or lime wedges, to garnish

How to make it:

Combine the water and fruit in a blender, and then pour this mixture into a pitcher, through a sieve. Stir in the lemon or lime juice and add sugar or sweetener to taste. Garnish the pitcher with a wedge of lemon or lime and serve with plenty of ice. If you do not have ice, you can chill the water and fruit before pureeing it, so the drink is cold.

What Exactly Is the Paleo Diet Program?

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

The paleo diet program has become popular recently thanks to the amount of beneficial results folks have had, where no other diet would work. The paleo diet is a form of a low-carb diet that is actually implemented as more of a way of living than a diet. It calls for dedication. It demands change. It yields results. You have to find paleo diet recipes. You need to eat a paleo breakfast, a paleo lunch, and a paleo dinner. I don't always snack, but when I do, its paleo.

What Exactly Is the Paleo Diet Program?

The key rule of the paleo diet is to eat like our ancestors, the cavemen. Cavemen didn't have farming and constantly had to hunt and gather for their meals. They survived on a diet of meat, fish, berries, fruit, roots, nuts, and vegetables. They were furthermore active and had to be physically in good shape to safeguard themselves and their families. There were no guns (the great equalizer) or even crossbows.

The paleo diet seeks to imitate the cavemen by foregoing carbs, eating a couple large meals every day, consuming a lot of animal fat, and ideally eating lots of organic produce. While typically animal fat is demonized as a cause of being overweight, a month or two eating as a caveman will teach you that carbohydrates are the real primary cause.

The main difference between this diet and previous low-carb diets, such as the Atkins, is that this is a way of living in addition to a diet. You can still eat fruits with this diet, even the ones with lots of natural sugar. It is all right if you slip-up every now and then. The key is to follow an 80%/20% principle; stay rigid to the program 80% of the time and don't worry if you slip up in the other 20%.

The diet works by schooling your body to begin digesting your body fat for your energy instead of using carbohydrates as in a normal American diet. Carbohydrates are not evil, it is just in our present state of civilization where many of us work in careers that call for little or no physical exercise, we don't need them. Eating more than half of your daily calorie consumption in carbohydrates when you are not an endurance athlete and asking yourself why you are obese is like wearing a winter coat to Miami and asking yourself why you are sweaty. By getting rid of carbohydrates from the diet and instead consuming your calories from animal fat and produce, your body is taught to break down fat instead of carbohydrates for energy.

So where to get started? For some people this diet is a substantial change to the status quo, and if you've been eating a particular way for most of your adult life it is not easy to switch at the flip of a coin. Here are a couple steps to help get you on the right path:

1. Discard all of your processed foods
This is an absolute must. It doesn't matter if you are getting with the paleo plan or if you are on a standard calorie-counting diet, processed foods are the most detrimental thing you can put into your system food-wise. They have chemical substances used to make manufacturing easier and faster, usually too much salt, low quality ingredients, virtually no nutritional value, and are often strictly simple carbohydrates. You ever ask yourself why most coupons are marketed only for this junk? Because it's trash and everyone knows it.

2. Get rid of fast food.
This may be challenging for people who live on a tight schedule, but you got to take care of yourself. Have you read recently that McDonalds just now eliminated a pink slime chemical (some form of ammonium) from their burgers because someone ratted them out to the press? Think about that for a moment. Pink slime. Makes me gag. They use the lowest quality meat at these places to make it cheap and quick to cook.

Slow Carb Dieting for Vegetarians

,
Easy Paleo Recipes :

At first glance the slow carb diet can seem extremely meat heavy. Having many of its roots in the paleo style of dieting, eating as we are evolved to do so being a hunter-gatherer species, there is a great emphasis on animal protein as a source of calories and nutrition. So can you successfully and healthily slow-carb-diet as a vegetarian? Yes, you can. If you are vegan, and eat no animal-derived foods at all, it will be much more difficult - but lacto-ovo vegetarians should have no problems.

Slow Carb Dieting for Vegetarians

Every vegetarian is used to fielding that old chestnut of a question, 'so, where do you get your protein then?' Obviously most of us aren't wasting away, and just about have the metabolic energy to explain (again) about complete and incomplete vegetable protein, how there are amino acids in just about every plant cell we consume, and how we don't have to eat all the essential ones in each meal, etc. Vegetarians are less likely to suffer from health conditions related to over-consumption of protein, but actual deficiency is extremely rare in the developed world.

On the slow carb diet, the lack of dairy is a frustration that lacto-ovo vegetarians might have trouble adjusting to. Dairy produce is probably the main reason for vegetarians ending up overweight in the first place, particularly cheese - providing a solid savory taste, it's easy to use it as a protein source in many meals, without being overly aware of the huge calorie density it provides. But on the slow carb diet, your protein is going to come from...

  • Those pulses you are eating at every meal - yes they are there to provide fiber, but also provide a high-quality vegetarian protein source, and you should judge portions accordingly
  • Nuts and nut butters - but beware the tumbling of dominoes along with your willpower, and purchase in small portions only!
  • Cottage cheese - permitted in small quantities. When purchasing from a store that has several brands, look closely at the indicated carb content and sugars, the variation may surprise you, and 'reduced fat' variants that might initially appeal to dieters are often higher in sugars as a result
  • Protein shakes - check ingredients carefully for sugars, and also for actual vegetarian content
  • Eggs - you are going to be eating a LOT of eggs!

Tim Ferriss is amongst many commentators and researchers who hold strong views on the appropriateness of soy protein in human nutrition - for many the jury is still out on this, but whilst the evidence gathering continues, it is wise to avoid over-dependency on soy in its many forms (for example tofu, tempeh, vegetarian meat substitutes, etc). This is particularly important if you are male and of reproductive age... and if you do want to eat tofu etc, then be sure to seek an organic source, as virtually all other soy beans have genetically modified origins in the US, and it may facilitate digestion to eat along with a fermented food such as miso or sauerkraut (or a probiotic supplement).

Most importantly though as a vegetarian is to learn to love eggs. Find an animal-friendly source of free-range organic eggs, and explore the multitude of ways you can prepare them - fried, poached, scrambled, boiled, hard boiled, baked, they can be enjoyed in so many different ways simply cooked alone, and once you start finding some great recipes to use them in then the sky is the limit. Sometimes people are concerned about eating 'too many' eggs due to their high cholesterol content, but the most recent research has debunked that direct correlation between personal cholesterol levels and the amount of cholesterol consumed, so you can safely consume several eggs a day as part of a balanced diet, particularly if it's not done in conjunction with a load of meat.

Don't forget to add your PAGG supplement for additional vegetarian enhancement of your slow-carb-diet - the plant derivation of all elements of the PAGG stack are another successful indicator for the effects of a plant-based diet on weight loss. Above all don't let the 'meat-heavy' aspects of the published slow-carb diet put you off attempting the plan as a vegetarian, because there is a growing canon of delicious and healthy vegetarian recipes to support your successful and healthy weight loss. And if you can break your Edam Cheese addiction into the bargain, it's got to be a win-win.
